customer reported getting flat battery when left for several hours. he never noticed the lamp at all and neither did i until i shut up shop for the evening and turned off the lights in the workshop where his car was inside.

so next day i was going straight for an earthing issue but couldn't find any, adding a direct earth did nothing to help and the lamp remained lit up.
i had to assume it was getting a draw from somewhere and possible a chafed or pinched wiring loom so time to start tracing back.
a couple of hours of head scratching and one or two choice words and eventually got the problem.

no chaffed wires
no pinched wires
in fact no wiring issue at all

believe it or not the problem was coming from an internal fault in the rev counter which was causing an earthing issue into the body control unit resulting in the rear lamp being lit up.

ive never seen this fault before or since but one well worth thinking about if you ever have a similar issue.

- low amount of heat blown inside the car
- after the first startup, slightly after the engine reached 90*C, there was a spike in the antifreeze temperature, it was going all the way near 100*C then everything got back to normal, and the temperature settled at 90*C.

So, after first blaming the central console (the one with the cold/heat, ventilation.. wheels), and trying to find a SH one, i've decided to dig a little and find out if there might be another cause to my problem.

My second guess was the thermostat, which in Alfa's tend to get stuck and therefore you won't get any heat in the car. I've checked both hoses, and everything was ok.
My third guess was the small valve that switches from heat to cold, this is another common problem, so i've removed the "carpet" that protects the inside fan and squeezed in to see if it works properly. As i suspected it was ok also.
My fourth guess was that the heating radiator is blocked and the antifreeze is not circulating properly through it, so i've checked the hoses and i found out that my return hose was kinda cold. Therefore i've checked to see if there is any air in, and it wasn't.
So, i drained all the antifreeze, and used a pump to force some water in the heating radiator in order to check if it is blocked or not. And it was blocked.
I've repeated the pump cycle a few times and i got allot of rusty/muddy looking liquid out of the heating radiator. I was hoping that this was the source of my heating problem.
Fortunately i was right, after refilling the antifreeze, and warming up the engine, my car was more then happy to provide me with the much needed heat

As a troubleshooter i would keep things as simple as possible:

1. check the thermostat / if bad, replace it
2. check if there is air in the heating circuit / open the aerator
3. check the central console if it commands the valve to switch from heat to cold (there is a small piston that you can see when the valve works properly)
3.a. if it's not moving, apply 12V directly to the valve to check if it's working, if it works, the you have to replace the central console
3.b. if it doesn't work, then replace the valve.
4. if the antifreeze looks a little rusty/muddy then you might have to clean the heating circuit as described above.

Well, that's about it.
I hope this will come in handy to others as well.[/hide]
