Will it be enough to edit the VIN on the target ECU's 95P08 EEPROM to get the car to start? The key does not appear to have a chip, just a remote.

I'm working on the Smart, when i try to lock/unlock the doors, it's blinking 9 times (i've replace of course the battery but nothing more).
When i want to start, nothing. I have a "X" on dash. I have only one key with 3 buttons (i don't know if it's normal for this year of car).
If someone could give me some information about this trouble and how to fix it, because there's no smart center in the 100kms around me.
I'm listen for all good way to solved this problem (immo off, new key, diagnose, etc.).

The only code which I have is U1431 - Actual gear implausible.

The code is saved and cannot be deleted, no matter what I do.
Sometimes the lamps go out, but the code still exist in the ESP memory.

Also the reverse gear cannot be put in. When i try with engine ON, at idle speed, at the tacho display from N it goes to 0. All other (N, 1, 2, and A) are working fine without bad sounds. If I shut the car down,with ignition ON the reverse goes as it should.

So far checked the front ABS sensor in 1 gear (at the lift), they are showing equal values. Adapted the gear and clutch actuators and no luck.

I think that the revers gear problem and the ESP code are connected, but so far I do not know how.

Any help would be highly appreciated.
