Can I use a regular ELM interface or are the correct leads needed?

Can anyone recommend on Connect 3 interfaces, mainly clones as this is for personal use and I dont want to spend huge amounts? There seems to be a big variety of clones available but Im not sure which would be best. Quite a few seem to still be using serial cables which doesnt help when I only have a usb laptop.

Does anyone know if there is a way of programming a virgin BCM to a K12 Micra using CLIP?????

I don't have consult tooling, or can the serial prom be swapped over from the original?
I'm concerned about hardware/software clashes in doing this because of the production dates for the new and old BCM?
